In South Florida, water is the enemy of everything you build. We are flat, we are barely above the water table, and we get summer storms that drop inches of rain in an hour. The difference between a property that shrugs that off and one that floods is almost always the same thing: grading.
What laser grading actually does
Laser grading uses a rotating laser and machine-mounted receivers to cut a surface to within a fraction of an inch of design elevation. On ground this flat, fractions of an inch are the whole game – a pad that is barely out of level in the wrong direction sends every storm toward your slab instead of away from it.
Where the water is supposed to go
Good drainage design in South Florida is a chain: roof and pavement shed to graded swales, swales carry water to inlets or retention ponds, and the pond holds it while it percolates down. Break any link – a filled-in swale, a settled low spot, an undersized pond – and the water finds your building instead.
Warning signs your grading has failed
Standing water against a foundation hours after rain. Mulch and sod washing across the sidewalk. A pool deck or driveway that puddles in the same spot every storm. Soggy ruts where a swale used to be. All of these are grading problems, and all of them get worse every wet season until the ground is re-shaped.
Swales are not decorative
Those shallow grass valleys along South Florida roads are engineered stormwater conveyance. They silt in, get driven over, and get filled by well-meaning landscapers. Municipalities and property owners hire us to rebuild them – projects like our University of Miami swale reconstruction and the Boynton Beach swale cleanup are exactly this work: re-cutting the profile so water moves the way the engineer intended.
Fixing a drainage problem for good
A lasting fix starts with shooting elevations to find out where the water actually wants to go, then re-grading to send it somewhere legal – a swale, an inlet, a pond – and compacting so the new shape holds. Sometimes that is an afternoon with a skid steer; sometimes it is a re-built swale system. Either way, guessing with a few yards of fill dirt is how people pay for the same fix twice.
If part of your property holds water every summer, have us look at it before the next wet season. We grade everything from single yards to full commercial sites across Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties.
